The Charm of College Towns
/There is something truly special about college towns, especially during the fall. Having gone to a smaller school that was not in a huge city, football and basketball seasons truly made the whole town and campus come alive. My favorite tradition was rolling the quad (with toilet paper) after a big team win and the North Carolina weather that time of year certainly didn’t hurt either. It is no secret to my friends that I love football season, even in the cold, but not having to deal with a harsh winter made game days in Winston-Salem that much better.
I love New York City and as a senior in high school I really wanted to end up at a school like NYU but as an adult I am so glad I was able to experience that small town charm for a few years before making my way to Philadelphia, Dallas and New York. Rent under $500 and tailgating with all your friends on a Saturday afternoon is something I wish could still be a reality. I tried to get any of my siblings to go to Wake so that I had endless excuses to visit but that didn’t work out in my favor
So what did I love about Wake Forest and Winston-Salem the most? The food. Any Wake Forest Alum will tell you that they do not leave town without an order of buffalo tenders and soft chips from Putters, a cajun filet biscuit from Bojangles or the shrimp and grits from the Fourth Street Filling Station. Despite the fact that many of my friends have left Winston-Salem, or as we like to call it “The Dash”, it will always feel like home.
